What is Ephedra?

In August 2002,  the United States Justice Department launched a criminal investigation of San Diego-based Metabolife International, the nation's largest manufacturer of the dieting products that use the ingredient ephedra.  Since early 1990s, the Food and Drug Administration has issued numerous warnings that ephedra, also known as ma huang, can cause heart attacks, seizures, strokes, sleeplessness, migraines, high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats.  Recently, the FDA disclosed that Metabolife promised to turn over 13,000 complaints it had received from consumers.  The agency also announced that the U.S. Department of Justice had begun investigating whether Metabolife knew about the dangers of the product and lied to the FDA.  It is believed that ephedrine has sickened or killed at least 800 users. 

Ephedra, derived from an Asiatic shrub, contains ephedrine, a stimulant that acts on the central nervous system.  It is found in products, such as Metabolife, metabolite, advocare and other products.  The FDA believes that ephedra may be related to more than 50 deaths. Most of the serious injuries involve high blood pressure that can cause bleeding in the brain, a stroke or a heart attack.
