BENZENE Exposure and Harmful Effects:
Exposure to Benzene can cause quite a few complications and adverse side effects. Benzene exposure is commonly found through environmental and occupational sources. High levels and long term exposure are especially harmful to individuals. The effects vary dependant on the type of exposure. The only common factor is that the effects can be devastating to the victim.
There are three ways that the short-term exposure can occur. By inhalation, when the victim breathes in a high concentration of benzene; by consumption, when food has been contaminated by the chemical; or by absorption, when the chemical is absorbed through the skin.
When benzene is inhaled the side effect can be dizziness, headache, rapid heart rate, drowsiness, confusion, and unconsciousness. Death can occur if the victim is not removed from the affected area in a short period of time.
Tissue damage may occur if benzene comes in contain with the skin or eyes. If contact with the skin occurs the victim should wash the chemical off as quickly as possible to prevent further damage.
It is rare that benzene would be consumed, but should it happen, the victim may experience stomach irritation, abdominal pain, vomiting, nausea, convulsions and even death. In the event that vomiting occurs there is a risk that benzene could flow into the lungs causing uncontrollable coughing and difficulty in breathing. Short term benzene poisoning symptoms can appear within minutes or hours depending on the level of exposure to the chemical. Severity of poisoning is dependant on the quantity of benzene, the exposure time and the health of the person affected.
Long-term exposure can lead to even more side effects. Most complications to long-term benzene affect the blood and bone marrow. The development of leukemia can occur or the loss of antibodies or white blood cells can alter the balance of blood which in turn can cause more issues. Suppression of the immune system can also occur, which affects the body’s ability to fight an infection.
Benzene has been classified by the Department of Health and Human Services as a known human carcinogen which has been associated with the cause of a number of cancers.
Exposure for more than 4 years to nearly 30 years has been blamed for a large number of cases of leukemia with some of those being fatal. Workers and individuals who come into contact with Benzene must take precautions and limit their exposure so as to reduce the risk of complications and deadly side effects.
If you have worked in any of these industries you may have a cause of action against the manufacturers of this cancer causing product.
